“Defending the Ports of those Indies”: Deployment and Operations of the Spanish Navy During the War 1796-1802

En el presente trabajo se analiza la estrategia de la Real Armada en América du- rante la guerra anglo-española de 1796-1802 El propósito es comprender el despliegue y la verdadera operatividad de la Marina en el continente americano, yendo más allá de las visiones tradicionales que estudian este conflicto a partir de los combates y las grandes batallas Como se podrá comprobar en el texto, además de la presión naval británica y la crisis económica y política de la Monarquía, la estrategia española estuvo marcada por la extensión geográfica del conflicto y el imposible despliegue simultáneo de las fuerzas nava- les en varios escenarios del imperio colonial.This paper seeks to analyse the strategy of the Spanish Navy in America during the Anglo-Spanish War of 1796-1802 The objective is to understand the deployment and the true operation of the Navy in the American continent, beyond the traditional visions that study this conflict through the combats and the great battles The main conclusion is that the Spanish naval strategy, in addition to British naval pressure and the economic and political crisis of the Monarchy, was marked by the geographical extension of the conflict and the impossible simultaneous deployment of naval forces in various scenarios of the colonial empir
